Manchester United had confirmed yesterday that a fee had been agreed with the Newcastle, who have now also agreed personal terms with the player on a five-year contract.

The Tyneside club have paid £6 million to bring the England striker to St James' Park, and the 26-year-old has already trained with his new team-mates, joining a training session today.

Newcastle have therefore won a race with several other suitors for the former Leeds United star, who had been told by Sir Alex Ferguson that he would not be offered a new deal at Old Trafford.

Smith could now make his Newcastle debut alongside former Leeds team-mate Mark Viduka in the Magpies' pre-season friendly against Sampdoria on Sunday. Smith will also link up with another ex-Leeds man, James Milner, at the Toon.
